Train Smarter and Harder

Every workout doesn't have to be your best workout

We do ourselves a disservice when we expect every training session to be better than the one before it - and then beat ourselves up when it’s not. Training simply doesn’t work like that.

As @coachdanjohn says in his book ‘Never Let Go’: “In a group of five workouts, I tend to have one great workout, the kind of workout that makes me think in just a few weeks I could be an Olympic champion,...” he goes on to say, “Where else in your life does something become better and better and better every single time? [...] How can you honestly think training improvements are that linear?”

What we see on social media from fitness influencers is not real life. We don’t look great, feel great, and get better every single day. Think about the people you see taking selfies and videoing their workouts at the gym. As soon as the camera is on, they’re smiling and giving 110%. But as soon as the camera is off, it’s back to ‘another average training day’. AND THAT’S OK! That’s what we should be celebrating. That we’re moving our bodies consistently, even when we’re not motivated to do so.

If you’re training consistently, let that be enough - trusting that every once in a while, you’re going to have a training day that will motivate you again for all of the average days that will inevitably follow.
