Gym Tour

Our Story

2020 has brought its fair share of challenges. Our original plan was to open a 2,500+ sq. ft. training facility where we could share our training philosophy and coaching enthusiasm with the Brentwood community and its surrounding neighbors. But 2020 had other plans. After careful consideration and an appreciation for offering safe, inclusive training, we’ve decided to open Train Smarter and Harder at our home. We’ve invested to renovate roughly 300 sq. ft. of our home, making it one of the cleanest and most progressive training spaces in Contra Costa County. Instead of waiting for a Coronavirus vaccine, which will give people the confidence to train in a group setting once again, we’re shifting our business plan so we can begin training individuals and small groups of family, friends, and teammates immediately. We want you to start training again, and we want to be able to offer you an ultra-clean, safe space to do it.

Our initial business plan may have changed, but our training philosophy has not. Here at Train Smarter and Harder, we’ve found the optimal way to train. Workouts are safe, easy on your joints, and get you results. We believe that following exercise progressions, avoiding pain, and having a ‘why’ behind everything we do in the gym (i.e. smart training) is a non-negotiable. But training smart doesn’t mean we don’t work hard, because we do. We use the word train instead of workout, exercise, or WOD, because training implies there is a bigger plan. You’re in it for the long haul. We create a plan, execute that plan, and make adjustments along the way.

Current exercise trends are resulting in injury, increased training stress, and they lack a vision for the future ‘you’. Their motto is “harder is better.” Our entire mission is to guide you on your lifetime training journey, in a way that supports your life outside of the gym, and within a community whose number one goal is to do no harm. We see a demand for safer training options and we’re answering that demand. We want to be your family trainer. Let us take care of you and your family.

What’s next?

We officially opened our (garage) door on July 18th under COVID restrictions. We’re working with business mentor Joe Hasey of Level Up Your Gym to get our systems in place and pricing in order. We hope to have a busy one-on-one and couples schedule by the end of the year, then knock it out of the park with small group training in 2021 when it’s safe to be indoors again.

Stick around and enjoy the journey with us. We’ll be sharing everything we learn as we go:

Train smarter AND harder,

Brendon & Jenny

I’ve been gettin a lot of questions if we are a legitimate business in the state of CA and the answer is YES.

We:

  • Applied and received a business tax certificate from our town. We filed our business name with both the county and state. Cities usually don’t allow this. We live in a small rural farming town that is supported only by small businesses like ours.

  • Had to have all of our adjacent neighbors sign an affidavit okaying that we could train people at our home.

  • Have limitations about parking, # of people, and times we can be open.

  • Cannot publicly share our address.

  • Bought a business insurance policy that covers us, the gym, and the house.

  • Have everyone sign a liability waiver, a COVID-19 assumption of risk, and a TS&H Terms & Conditions form.

  • Opened a business checking account in our town.

  • Bought an AED, First Aid Kit, and have our CPR certifications.

  • Made sure the building (garage) is up to code including a fire extinguisher, fire alarm, and Co2 detector.

  • Run all of our forms and financial decisions by lawyers and our accountant before moving forward.

  • Follow all COVID protocols required by the state and our town.
