“I want to lose weight”
“I want to jump higher”
“I want to be able to do a chin up”

There's only one way to know you're getting better, and that's tracking what you've done over time. If you show up to the gym and pick random things to do, you’ll get random results. When you have a plan, you can execute that plan. And it’s been proven to be a better motivator long-term than having a goal or even passion.

A plan takes the guesswork out of what needs to be done today, and will get you back on track tomorrow - with or without the motivation. Excitement and motivation will get you in the door, but having a plan paired with a bit of effort gets you on the podium (or the lost weight, or the higher vertical, or your first chin up).

Don’t have a plan? Find a coach to write you one, or at a minimum, pick one to three things you want to get better at and start tracking them daily. Read this review on the book “Motivation Myth” by Jeff Haden to learn more about making a plan.
